Box Score Lethbridge –The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, looking to bounce back after Friday night’s 5-2 loss, were unable to mount a comeback for the second night in a row against the University of Alberta Pandas, as the visiting team skated to a 2-1 victory to complete the weekend sweep.
Jessica Kampjes scored both goals for the Pandas, bringing her weekend tally to four, while Kirsten Reeves netted the lone marker for the Pronghorns.
Starting in net for Alberta was Lindsay Post, who faced 21 shots on the night. Crystal Patterson got the start for Lethbridge, turning aside 16 of the 18 she faced.
It took all of twenty seconds after the opening face-off for Pandas’ Kampjes to net her first goal of the night. Alone beside the net, Kampjes diligent offensive pressure paid off quickly, beating an unsuspecting Patterson with her first shot of the night.
Kirsten Reeves replied for the ‘Horns with a little help from Chelsea Minor. Nearing the midway point of the first, Minor found Reeves as she streaked hard into the slot and unloaded a high wrister that snuck past Post’s blocker-side shoulder.
The remainder of the first saw both teams struggle to materialize anything offensively. The ‘Horns looked tighter, defensively, than during last night’s game; cutting off passes and dismantling some great offensive efforts from Pandas’ Brandi Buss and Lindsay Cunningham. At the end of the period shots on goal were deadlocked at 8-8.
Trading chances at each end, neither team was able to generate any substantive momentum for the better part of the second period. Kayla Lavallee’s hard shot was gloved down by Patterson but the Lethbridge net-minder was unable to stop freshman Kampjes from earning her second marker of the night, at 15:33. Parked in front of the net amid a flurry of bodies, Kampjes managed to get a piece of the puck, enough to lift it up and in, past the Lethbridge net-minder.
Despite a late push from the Pronghorns, they would fail to rally the much needed equalizer to force extra time.
With this win, the Pandas improve to 15-6-1 (CW) while the Pronghorns sit at 6-13-3 (CW). Next week the Pronghorns travel to Winnipeg where they will face off against the University of Manitoba Bisons in a two game series. The Pandas return home, where they will host the University of Calgary Dinos.
