Lethbridge – With only ten games remaining in the conference schedule the race for playoff positioning is heating up. The Lethbridge Pronghorn women’s hockey team is looking to build off an impressive win over the second place Regina Cougars last Saturday night, as they travel to Vancouver to face the UBC Thunderbirds this weekend.
The lose one, win one trend continued for the ‘Horns (6-9-3 CW) this past weekend, dropping a 2-1 decision Friday night before earning a convincing win over the CIS ninth ranked Cougars Saturday, 5-1. Through nine weekend series’ this season the ‘Horns have not won a Friday night yet this season.
Saturday night’s five goal outburst was only the second time the ‘Horns had scored more than four goals this season.
Megan Bailey continues to lead the ‘Horns offensively with 11 points (6 goals, 5 assists), while Kirsten Reeves and Sarah Spence both have 10 points.
Between the pipes, Crystal Patterson continues to carry the bulk of the load for the ‘Horns, starting in all but one game this season and has a solid 2.09 goals-against-average and 0.925 save percentage.
For the Thunderbirds, they return home this weekend after an impressive road weekend split with the CIS second ranked Calgary Dinos. After losing 4-2 to open the weekend series, the Thunderbirds squeaked out a 2-1 win over the Dinos and are in fourth place, four points up on the ‘Horns.
Equally offensively challenged as the ‘Horns, the Thunderbirds have scored the third fewest goals in the conference with 39, but unlike the ‘Horns, the Thunderbirds have two players among the top 20 scorers in Canada West. Rebecca Unrau sits eighth on the conference list with nine goals and seven assists, while Kaitlyn Imai is 17
th with 13 points.
Between the pipes, it looks like former national team member Danielle Dube has cemented herself as the T-Birds starter, playing in both games last weekend and five of the last eight. She has accumulated at sparkling 1.75 goals-against-average and leads the conference in save percentage at 0.941%.
Puck drop is scheduled both Friday and Saturday night at 7:00pm at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. Live stats can be found at
