CALGARY – In the first game of a home-and-home set this weekend, the University of Calgary Dinos picked up their second win of the season in a 2-1 decision against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Friday night at the Father David Bauer Arena.

Making her first CIS start, goaltender Hayley Dowling backstopped Calgary to their second win in as many games. Despite going down 1-0 in the first period, the rookie goalie rebounded to lead her team, while captain Sinead Tracey notched the game-winner.

"I came out nervous but after that first goal I recouped and felt stronger," said Dowling on her CIS debut. "The team was taking away passes and that made it easier on me."

The Dinos improve to 2-2-1, while the Pronghorns' record drops to 1-2-2. These two teams will meet up again tomorrow night in Lethbridge.

In the opening shifts of the first period it appeared the Pronghorns would dominate the game. Lethbridge had several good shots on net in the opening minutes but Calgary found a way to rally and limit their chances.

Momentum shifted midway through the first when Calgary's Chelsea Peterson took a fast collision against the boards in the Dinos' end and did not return for the remainder of the game.

The Pronghorns opened the scoring with two minutes remaining in the first. Erica Williams got her first of the year sneaking a shot under Dowling.

A mere 20 seconds into the second, the Dinos tied the game on the power play. Jessyka Holt tipped a point shot from Jenna Smith to beat Lethbridge's Crystal Patterson five-hole.

Calgary grew hungry after their first goal with several 2-on-1 chances. It wasn't until late in the second that a crisp backhand pass from Janelle Parent landed on Tracey's stick to beat Patterson and put the puck in the empty net for her first of the year. The goal gave Calgary their first lead of the game and a 2-1 advantage through 40 minutes.

"It felt good to finally put one in their for the team and break that tie," said Tracey on her game winner. "We were consistent this game. We didn't wait till the third when we are down a few, that was the biggest difference for us."

Penalties reddened the third period but both goalies held their ground.

The Pronghorns nearly capitalized on a power play early in the third but Dowling kept the Dinos ahead. Play was much the same in Lethbridge's end with Patterson holding the Dinos to their one-goal lead when she flashed a quick glove save in the dying seconds of the third.

A late penalty took away from any last minute chances by the Pronghorns as the Calgary sealed Dowling's first CIS win.

The Dinos will play the Pronghorns once more tomorrow night in Lethbridge, action starts at 7 p.m.
