CALGARY - Tessa Miller scored a goal and added two assists in her final home game as the University of Calgary Dinos defeated the Lethbridge Pronghorns 4-1 on Oct. 19 at West Varsity Pitch.
Playing for the Breast Cancer Foundation on a windy Saturday afternoon, the Dinos completed the regular season with a 6-4-2 record before heading into playoffs next weekend while the Pronhhorns fell to 0-10-2 and will not qualify for the post season.
Calgary celebrated Lauren Deeks and Miller, two fifth-year players that played their last home game of their career as Dinos. Miller now sits in second in scoring in the conference with a total of 17 points (six goals, 11 assists) for the 2013-14 season after today's game.
As the pace of the game settled in for both teams, the Dinos found themselves in Lethbridge's end in the opening minutes. From there, it took only 20 minutes for Calgary to net their first goal of the game. Clogging up the six-yard box, Deeks buried the ball in the back of the net for her first of the season with Pronghorn's goalkeeper Taylor Thomas not having much of a chance. The assists came from Nikki Furukawa and Miller.
Less than 90 seconds later, in another busy area in front of the net, Ann Stranges put the Dinos ahead by two with her fifth of the season, once again assisted by centre midfielder Miller. Less than two minutes after the second goal, Calgary scored their third of the game in a flurry of activity. Miller put her shot past Thomas for her sixth goal of the season, and her third point of the game. Furukawa assisted.
Before the half was over, the Dinos continued to put the pressure on in Lethbridge's end. Stranges fed Lauren Vernon the ball from the right sideline and Vernon's shot was a high ball that sailed over Thomas' head despite her best efforts to jump and catch it.
In the second half, head coach Troye Flannery got a chance to rest some of his top players for the upcoming playoffs, giving some fresh Dinos talent a chance on the pitch.
The Pronghorn's stole away Calgary goalkeeper Lauren Good's shut out chances when they scored their lone goal of the game in the 84th minute from Meaghan Welby. Emily Felker assisted on the goal.
The Dinos await their playoff seeding after the final games of the regular season are played tomorrow before it's determined who they will play in the Canada West quarter-finals next weekend.
