Box Score

Lethbridge – An early overtime goal by Captain Jenna-Marie Durnin lifted the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns to a 2-1 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, Friday night, as the teams faced off for the first of a two-game weekend series.

Lethbridge's other goal was scored by Sarah Spence, while Marley Ervine netted the lone goal for the Huskies.

Shauntelle Williams got her second consecutive start for the Pronghorns and faced 24 shots on the night. In net for Saskatchewan was Cassidy Hendricks, who managed to stop all but 2 of the 26 she faced.

The Huskies didn't waste any time looking for their first goal. With little more than a minute into the opening frame, Ervine came out of the corner with the puck, drove to the net, and managed to jam the puck in past Williams to give her team an early lead.

The Huskies tried to follow up and increase their lead before the end of the first but despite great chances from Julia Flinton, whose hard blast from the point went wide, and solid efforts by Alicia Van Alstyne and Cami Cooster, who each found the post, they would be unable to add another marker.

The second period saw each team trade penalties and scoring chances. Amber Yuha, Sadie Lenstra, and Megan Bailey each had great chances for the Horns, but none would manage to crack Hendricks.

The equalizer came with 16.2 seconds to go in the frame.  Sarah Spence's hard wrister went top shelf, glove side, from Kirsten Reeves and Glenda Edie, knotting things up at ones heading into the second intermission.

The shift in offensive pressure was palpable in the third as both teams were desperately looking for a go-ahead goal. Kaitlin Willoughby had a great chance for the Huskies, in close, but was stonewalled by Williams. Sadie Lenstra and Amber Yuha each came close for the Horns but they, too, were unable to convert. Still tied 1-1 at the end of regulation, this game was headed to overtime.

With the Horns still riding the offensive momentum they had built up in the latter half of the third, the shots on Hendricks were coming hard and fast. Lethbridge's Jasmine Teske managed to fire a quick slap pass to Durnin through traffic and she unloaded a hard one-timer that beat Hendricks high blocker side.

With the win the 'Horns improve to 3-2-2 on the season, while the Huskies earn a single point in the overtime loss and move to 4-2-1.
Game two of the weekend series goes tomorrow night at Nicholas Sheran Arena. Game time is set for 7pm and the game will be streamed live on canadawest.tv
