Box Score Lethbridge – With five first half goals, the country's top ranked team, UBC Thunderbirds lived up to their billing, beating the Lethbridge Pronghorns 8-0 in both teams second last conference game of the season.
The Thunderbirds received goals from Milad Mehrabi (2), Niall Cousens, Harry Lakhan, Reynold Stewart, Mitchell Popadynetz and Lucus Reis.
Playing a ball control game, the T-Birds used crisp passing and a patient attack to break down the 'Horns defense and add to their league leading goal totals. Heading into the contest the Thunderbirds had scored a conference high 39 goals.
While the Thunderbirds had the vast majority of the ball control, they only attempted 13 shots and were content to wait for quality shooting chances, which they were very efficient scoring on eight of their nine shots on goal.
The 'Horns only generated three shot attempts on the day, with two finding the mark, but none were able to beat Richard Meister.
Mehrabi opened the scoring 12 minutes in, taking a short corner kick and walking into the 'Horns penalty area before picking the corner with a low drive. Two minutes later Mehrabi picked up his second goal of the day.
The T-Birds finished a span of three goals in seven minutes with Lakhan curling a corner kick into the top portion of the near post, past the out stretched arms of 'Horns starter Tyler Boast.
Capitalizing on a Pronghorn turnover near midfield, Cousens added to the T-Birds lead, hitting the left corner from the middle of the penalty area.
Just before half, Stewart scored the T-Birds fifth first half marker, blasting a shot off the post and in.
The Thunderbirds picked right up where they had left off, scoring less than two minutes into the second half, with an own goal being award for the T-Birds sixth goal.
Finding himself unmarked in the box, Mitchell Popadynetz scored the T-Birds seventh goal in the 78
th minute and Lucas Neis scored on a penalty shot in the 86
th minute to conclude the scoring.
The 'Horns will host the Trinity Western Spartans in their final game of the season tomorrow afternoon, kick-off is scheduled for 2:15pm. The T-Birds will travel to Calgary tomorrow to face the Dinos in their final game before the post-season.
