Final Home Stand of 2013 for Women’s Soccer

10/9/2013 3:13:00 PM

Lethbridge – Heading into their final home games of the season, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's soccer team (0-7-2 CW) faces the tough task of hosting the two stingiest teams in Canada West this weekend in the UBC Thunderbirds (5-0-3 CW) and Trinity Western Spartans (4-1-3 CW).

The 'Horns will face the T-Birds Saturday and the Spartans on Sunday, kick-off for both games is at 12:00pm at the University Community Sports Stadium.

After playing solid defensively through the first four weeks of the season themselves, the 'Horns had a tough weekend in British Columbia last week, surrendering 12 goals in their two losses to the Victoria Vikes and Fraser Valley Cascades. The 'Horns had only given up 11 goals in their previous seven games.

At the other end of the field, the 'Horns continue to struggle to find the back of the net and are tied with two other teams for the fewest goals scored in the conference with four.

Through eight games this season, the CIS sixth ranked UBC Thunderbirds have only surrendered one goal, which ranks them the top defensive team in the country. Fraser Valley is the only team to score on the Thunderbirds.

While the T-Birds have tallied 19 goals this season, that number could be a bit misleading as they scored 10 times during their two wins last weekend, including eight versus the Winnipeg Wesmen. Janine Frazao leads the T-Birds with four goals.

The task doesn't get much easier for 'Horns on Sunday, hosting the second best defensive team in the Spartans. The Spartans have only surrendered four goals this season but despite winning both games last weekend the Spartans dropped out of the CIS Top 10 rankings.

The Spartans enter the weekend having not surrendered a goal in four straight games and their shutout streak has reached 390 minutes going back to the September 21st game versus the Saskatchewan Huskies.

The 'Horns will close out the 2013 Canada West season next weekend traveling to Calgary to face the Dinos for one game.
