Lethbridge – Despite a late third period surge, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns were unable to mount a comeback and fell 4-3 to the visiting University of Manitoba Bisons, Friday night, in the first of a two game weekend series.

Sadie Lenstra scored once for the Pronghorns and Megan Bailey had a two goal night. Bison goals were scored by Rachele Bosc, Kyleigh Palmer, and Amy Lee, who netted two on the night.

Lethbridge's Crystal Patterson and Manitoba's Amanda Schubert each faced 24 shots on the night.

Jessica Rosenbaum went head-to-head with Patterson in the opening frame after being awarded a penalty shot for being taken down on a breakaway by Jasmine Teske. A confident Patterson stayed with her the whole time and skillfully turned the puck aside.

The Bisons cracked the score sheet not once, but twice, with less than one minute remaining in the first. With a flurry of bodies in front of the Horns net, Amy Lee stuffed one in, from Jayden Skoleski and Maggie Litchfield-Medd, and just seconds later, riding the momentum of their first goal, fifth-year forward Kyleigh Palmer tried to center the puck but her pass was inadvertently blocked and she managed to control the loose puck once again before netting her fifth of the season at 19:56.

Lee added her second of the night early in the second, from Alana Serhan and Chantal Gamache. With lots of traffic in front of the net, Lee chipped the puck up and over Patterson's glove-side shoulder and into the net.

Bosc unloaded a hard shot from just inside the blue at 8:04, passed a screened Patterson, from Lee and MacDonald, bringing the tally to four unanswered.

'Horns' Megan Bailey came flying into the Bisons end, out-skating the defender to get to the puck, ripped around the net and with an outstretched stick managed to beat a down and out Schubert with a nearly textbook wrap-around.

The Horns looked to push back offensively in the third and their hard work paid off as Lenstra earned her fifth of the season, from Amber Yuha, at 11:01, making it 4-2.

Capitalizing on a Bisons penalty, Edie unloaded a hard slapper into traffic and the rebound was gobbled up by Bailey who snuck the puck over the line to bring her team within one with less than a minute remaining but that would be as close as they'd come.

With this win, the Bisons improve to 6-4-1 (CW) while the Horns fall to 3-6-2 (CW). Game two of the weekend series goes tomorrow night at Nicholas Sheran Arena. Puck drop is set for 7pm and the game will be streamed live at http://canadawest.tv.
