Calgary – The Mount Royal Cougars fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Lethbridge Pronghorns this evening at the Flames Community Arenas. Aislinn Kooistra, Kirsten Reeves and Sadie Lenstra scored for the Pronghorns. Reanna Arnold and Emily Harrison scored for the Cougars. Glenda Edie scored the Shootout winner.
The Cougars applied pressure early and caused a number of scoring chances but could not convert. At the 11:50 mark of the first period the Cougars did finally break through as Reanna Arnold potted her fourth goal of the season. Less than a minute later Aislinn Kooistra scored for the Pronghorns to tie the game and that is how it would end going into the first intermission.
The Cougars high energy pace continued and the scoring chances began to mount. The Cougars outshot the Pronghorns 21-13 after two periods of play but it was Lethbridge who found the score sheet. Kirsteen Reeves and Sadie Lenstra scored less than 40 seconds apart to give Lethbridge a 3-1 lead heading into the intermission.
Emily Harrison scored just before the midway point in the period to get the Cougars within a goal of tying the game. Lethbridge held on as long as they could but the Cougar's pressure was relentless. With 58 seconds left in the game Shyla Stadnicki buried a goal to send the game to overtime.
Overtime solved nothing so it was off to a shootout. After the Cougars couldn't score on their first attempt, Sarah Spence scored for Lethbridge on a Peter-Forsberg-like move to give Lethbridge the lead. Tanika Dawson needed to score to keep the game alive and she did just that, tying the score at one. Glenda Edie then went forehand, back to score and win the game for Lethbridge.
Mount Royal now holds a record of 2-10-1. The Pronghorns are now 4-7-2.
These two teams will play the second game of their home and home series tomorrow night in Lethbridge at Nicholas Sheran Arena, puck drops at 7:00pm and will be streamed live on hhtp://canadawest.tv.
