Lethbridge – On the heels of their first four-point weekend of the season, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's hockey team travels to Vancouver to face the defending Canada West and conference leading UBC Thunderbirds in both teams' final games of the first semester.
This weekend's match up will be the second meeting of the year. In the opening weekend of the season, the 'Horns and Thunderbirds split their series in Lethbridge but the 'Horns earned an extra point in a 5-4 shootout loss before beating UBC 3-2 the next night.
The 'Horns put an end to a four game losing streak last weekend in a big way, sweeping the Mount Royal Cougars in a home-and-home series. The pair of wins put the 'Horns right back into the playoff picture and they currently sit one point back of the Calgary Dinos for the final post-season position.
Ranked near the middle of the pack offensively with 32 goals scored, the 'Horns are led by Sadie Lenstra (6 goals, 3 assists), Kirsten Reeves (5 goals, 4 assists) and Sarah Spence (4 goals, 4 assists).
Prior to losing last Saturday night in Winnipeg, the CIS sixth ranked T-Birds had rattled off eight wins in a row.
A big reason for the T-Birds success again this season has been the play of their specialty teams. UBC sports the top ranked power play, operating at 18.3% efficiency. They also kill off 91.9% of their penalties, which is tied for first in the conference.
Up front, the T-Birds Tatiana Rafter leads all Canada West scorers with 19 points, while four other Thunderbird players are ranked among the top 20 in conference scoring. Sarah Casorso sits third with 16 points and Nicole Saxvik is ninth with 11 points.
Former Canadian national team goaltender Danielle Dube has carried the bulk of the load in the T-Birds crease and in nine appearances she sports a 2.06 goals-against-average and 0.934 save percentage.
The 'Horns will return to action in the New Year, traveling to Regina to face the Cougars January 4
