VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds women's hockey team scored two shorthanded goals en route to a 3-0 shutout of the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday night in Vancouver.

Melissa Goodwin sank the winner for UBC in the second period, her second CIS goal with the Thunderbirds. The other two markers came from Stephanie Payne and Tatiana Rafter, both shorthanded.

The 'Birds will enter the winter break with a record of 12-3-1 record, good enough for top spot in Canada West. Despite playing well on the weekend, the Pronghorns drop both games in Vancouver and fall to 5-8-1 (seventh place).

After a scoreless first period, the 'Birds drew first blood on the power play as Goodwin snapped in a rebound off Stephanie Schaupmeyer's tip at 12:11 of the second period.

It was the only power play goal by UBC despite Lethbridge being assessed the first seven penalties of the game. The Pronghorns ended the game with nine penalties in all. They were unsuccessful on all five of their power plays and were also the victims of two shorthanded markers by UBC.

At 1:41 in the third frame on the penalty kill, Payne scored on a slap shot from the blue line after getting the puck off a faceoff won by UBC.

With 3:23 to go in the third, Rafter hammered in the Thunderbirds' second shorthanded goal of the game off a pass from Nikola Brown-John in the slot.

UBC's Danielle Dube nabbed the shutout win, stopping all 23 shots she faced. Pronghorn netminder Crystal Patterson was spectacular in the face of the UBC onslaught, making 43 saves on 46 shots.

Both teams are now off from Canada West play until the weekend of Jan. 3-4, 2014. That's when Lethbridge will visit Regina and UBC will travel to Calgary to face the Dinos.
