Lethbridge – With their loss last Saturday night versus the Mount Royal Cougars, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women’s hockey team (8-15-3) was eliminated from post-season contention and will conclude the 2012-13 Canada West season this weekend traveling to Saskatoon to face the Saskatchewan Huskies (10-12-4).
After upsetting the Calgary Dinos Friday night, the Huskies were able to clinch the final playoff spot with the ‘Horns loss.
The ‘Horns enter the final weekend tied for last spot in the conference with the Mount Royal Cougars but will look to end the season on a positive note. With only two players completing their eligibility this year, the ‘Horns could potential return 22 players for next season. Playing in their final games this weekend will be four-year Captain Ashley Beattie and defender Amy Van Buskirk.
Kirsten Reeves and Megan Bailey lead the ‘Horns in scoring with 15 points apiece. Reeves leads the team in goals with 12, which ties her for third in the conference.
After missing 15 games due to injury, 2011-12 Canada West rookie of year Sadie Lenstra has started to hit her stride, scoring her first goal of the season last Saturday night.
While the Huskies have clinched a playoff spot, seeding is still to be determined during the final weekend. The Huskies know they’ll head out on the road next weekend but their opponent is yet to be determined. UBC is one point ahead of the Alberta Pandas for third place and the Huskies trail the Manitoba Bisons by one point for fifth. UBC and Alberta also have a chance to catch the Regina Cougars for second place and a first round bye.
Offensively, the bulk of the Huskies damage is done by the trio of Cara Wooster, Cami Wooster and Danny Stone. The top line has accounted for 29 of the 60 goals scored by the Huskies this season.
Cara Wooster leads the way and is tied for second in the conference with 29 points, while her sister Cami has 23 points and Stone has collected 22.
The ‘Horns and Huskies split their series earlier this season in Lethbridge with the Huskies winning 2-1 before the ‘Horns scratched out a 4-3 overtime win.
Both Friday and Saturday nights games are slated for 7:00pm CST at Rutherford Arena in Saskatoon. Live stats can be found at:
