Box Score
Lethbridge – With a goal in extra time from a long range free kick, the Winnipeg Wesmen earned their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
Laura Carroll scored the game winner for the Wesmen, while Danielle Comeau registered the other marker. Emily Felker responded for the Pronghorns with a goal from the penalty spot.
Comeau opened the scoring, looping a ball over the head of 'Horns goaltender Taylor Thomas in the 10
th minute.
It didn't take the 'Horns long to respond; three minutes later 'Horns freshman Meaghan Welby was taken down in the box after streaking past a Wesmen defender and a penalty kick was awarded. Felker stepped up to the penalty spot and made no mistake beating Wesmen keeper Margot Henry low left.
Neither was able to add to the score sheet the rest of the half but both teams had their opportunities. Wesmen had a dangerous looking free kick but the attempt sailed wide.
Kayla Faszer had best chance for the 'Horns but her shot in the 38
th minute was turned away from danger by Henry.
The 'Horns held a slight 10-9 shot attempt advantage in the half.
Despite controlling much of the play in the second half they were unable to find the back of the net. Welby was once again dangerous for the 'Horns and she nearly broke the tie but her chip over a charging Henry sailed over the bar.
After a 'Horns foul on the 35-yard line in injury time, Winnipeg's Carroll curled her long range shot off the far post and over the outstretched arms of Thomas to lift the Wesmen to victory.
While it looked bleak, the 'Horns did have back-to-back corner kicks before the final whistle but were unable to captialize.
With the loss the 'Horns remain winless at 0-3-0, while the Wesmen improve to 1-3-0 on the season.
The 'Horns will wrap up the weekend hosting the Manitoba Bisons tomorrow afternoon at 12:00pm and the Wesmen will conclude their Alberta swing a game in Calgary versus the Dinos.
