EDMONTON – In their third-straight game against a provincial rival, the #5 University of Alberta Golden Bears continued to keep the upper hand, earning a 2-0 win against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, Saturday afternoon at Foote Field.

Fourth-year forward Jermele Campbell tallied his second game-winner of the season while fellow fourth-year forward Marcus Johnstone notched his 24th in Evergreen and Gold silks, placing him alone in second place in Golden Bear all-time conference scoring.

In a defence-heavy match, team-leading scorer Mohamed Teliani sent in Campbell alone on a partial breakaway, the Edmonton native firing it far side for the 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute.

Moments later, Campbell almost doubled the lead when his shot from the 18-yard box perimeter hit the crossbar and ricocheted straight down before bouncing to a Pronghorn defender who cleared the ball quickly.

Johnstone earned his milestone marker in the 35th minute, a recipient of a tic-tac-toe play courtesy senior defender Eddy Sidra and rookie midfielder Tim Hickson, taking a cross in the middle and firing it shortside for the 2-0 Alberta lead.

The two squads then engaged in a back-and-forth battle in midfield before the Bears managed to make a final surge towards the Lethbridge goal in the final minutes, the best scoring chance coming in the 89th minute from FC Edmonton alum Sidra, who streaked down the sideline and sifted a pass into the middle where sophomore midfielder Theo Chu shot center mass at Pronghorn third-year netminder Tyler Boast, making the save but having trouble with the rebound before his defence assisted in clearing the ball to safety.

The 3-0-1 Bears and 1-4 Lethbridge meet again Sunday afternoon at Foote Field, game time at approximately 2:15 p.m. MT.

Game notes: Before today's tally, Johnstone was in a tie for second-place with former Golden Bear David Phillips (1986-90) and the current Bear only needs three more goals to claim first from Brett Colvin (2007-11).
