Lethbridge – After falling behind early into the match, the Lethbridge Pronghorns battled back to defeat the Mount Royal Cougars 3-2 Saturday afternoon in game one of the two game weekend series.
Dominique Point du Jour, Devin Diano and Guy Costa scored for the Pronghorns, while Cody Cook scored twice for the Cougars.
With the win the 'Horns improve to 2-5-0 and move to within one point of the Cougars, who fall to 2-3-1 on the season.
Off a second consecutive corner, Mount Royal opened the scoring in the 17
th minute with Matt Tarko's corner finding Cook in the box, redirecting the ball past Boast.
Riding the momentum of the opening goal, the Cougars pushed the 'Horns on their heels for a period of time but the 'Horns defense held, allowing them to recover and find the equalizer.
A slick through ball from Guy Costa sprung 'Horns captain Dominique Point du Jour, who while racing towards Cougar keeper David Thalheimer, chipped Thalheimer and knotted the score at one.
Moments later, off a long throw from Conner Brady deep in Mount Royal's zone, Devin Diano collected a loose ball in the box and made no mistake to give the 'Horns the lead in the 40
th minute.
After surrendering two consecutive goals in quick succession, the Cougars battled back before the half to tie the score at two. Cook ran on to a ball between two 'Horns defenders and picked up his second of the day beating Boast with a well placed shot to the bottom right corner.
After a wild ending to the first 45 minutes, the second half began with more reserved and controlled play until a penalty kick was awarded in the 58
th minute. Point du Jour broke on to a through ball well into the Cougar box but was taken down by Cougar keeper Thalheimer and a penalty was awarded. Keeping his composure after his first attempt was disallowed due to the ball rolling, Costa stepped up and picked the low right corner to give the 'Horns a 3-2 lead.
Pushing forward for the remainder of the second half looking for the tying goal, the Cougars came close to earning the equalizer a couple of the times but their best chance came in the 83
rd minute. Off a scramble in front of the 'Horns net where Boast failed to get his hands on the ball, Mike Stacey was able to get a shot off but the ball sailed over the crossbar.
These same two teams face-off tomorrow afternoon to conclude the two game weekend series. Kick-off goes at 2:15pm at the University Community Sports Stadium.
