REGINA, Sask. – The University of Regina's women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the first half to overcome an early deficit and that was all it would need as the Cougars held on for a 2-1 win over Lethbridge on Sunday at a blustery U of R Field.
Meagan Cormier and Tayler Firth both scored for the Cougars, while the only ball that beat keeper Kacey McFee was an own goal in the opening minutes of the game.
The Cougars improve to 3-3-1 with the win and are now tied with Mount Royal for sixth in the Canada West standings with 10 points.
Sunday's match opened with a brisk south wind blowing directly towards the Lethbridge end, but it was the visiting Pronghorns that got on the board first. In the sixth minute, a failed clearing attempt by the back line of the Cougars went right into their own net to give Lethbridge an early lead.
The slim one-goal advantage lasted until the 28th minute, when Lethbridge defender Jaime Nadeau took down Firth from behind in the 18-yard box. Cormier made no mistake on the ensuing penalty kick, driving a low ball into the right mesh past an outstretched Myriah Marino to score her fourth of the season.
The Cougars thought they had taken the lead four minutes later after Jayde McFee connected on a header off a long Jessica Meyer free kick, but the play was whistled for an offside. Less than a minute later, Lethbridge had a dangerous opportunity of its own thwarted by an offside call, but the Cougars broke through for the go-ahead goal in the 36th minute. The play built up with a nice pass from Jayde McFee to Molly Glass, who found Firth in stride. Firth beat Marino to the far post to collect her first goal of the season and score what would turn out to be the match-winning goal.
Lethbridge's best opportunity to tie the game came late in injury time, but McFee dove to her right to make her best save of the contest off a drive by Alycia Amatto.
Lethbridge (0-5-2) will have a pair of away matches at Victoria and Fraser Valley next weekend, while the Cougars will also hit the road next Saturday and Sunday for contests at Alberta and Mount Royal.
