Calgary – The Mount Royal Cougars earned their first win of the season this afternoon defeating the Lethbridge Pronghorns 1-0. A penalty kick goal from Kelsey Kinzner proved to be the difference in a very tight match.
Eleven minutes into the contest Kennedy Paonessa of the Cougars rang one off the bar and followed her rebound into the box getting fouled in the process. The Cougars were awarded a penalty kick and Kelsey Kinzner stepped up and buried the ball in the back left corner to put the Cougars up 1-0.
The half was fairly quiet afterwards yielding few scoring chances and the Cougars headed into the half leading by a goal.
Early in the second half Lethbridge had thought they had tied the game but the goal was called back due to an offside which sent the fans travelling from Lethbridge into a frenzy.
The Pronghorns had several more scoring chances but Cougars Keeper Janelle Chicilo was not going to be beat on this day. With two free kicks in less than a minute the Pronghorns were unable to get the ball by Chicilo.
On the second free kick the ball was blocked by the wall and then it spun wildly into the air where the ball was then directed at the top corner. Chicilo leaped and batted the ball away to preserve the lead.
As the game entered extra time Lethbridge again pressed and fired a shot on goal. Once again Chicilo made another of her 5 beautiful saves to clinch the game for Mount Royal. The final buzzer sounded less than two seconds after the miraculous save.
The 'Horns return home next weekend to host the University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba. Kick-off for both games is scheduled 12:00pm at the University Community Sports Stadium.
