Lethbridge – With important playoff points on the line, the University of Calgary Dinos scored three goals in each period to lead them to an impressive 9-0 win, Friday night, against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.

Even in their match-ups so far this season and deadlocked for points heading into tonight's game, the 'Horns and Dinos faced off in the first of a two-game home and home series, Friday night, and the stakes were high as each team looked to clinch an important sixth spot in the Canada West division.

Kitti Trencsenyi, Alex Gowie, Stephanie Zvonkovic, and Chelsea Peterson each earned individual markers for the Dinos. Erika Mitschke added two on the night while Jenna Smith earned three of her own, for the hattrick.

Amanda Tapp got the start for Calgary and stood tall between the pipes, turning aside all 27 shots she faced to earn the shut-out.

Crystal Patterson started in net for Lethbridge and allowed three goals on ten shots in the opening period prior to being relieved in the second by Shauntelle Williams, who went on to face 18 shots on the night.

U of C showed lots of offensive pressure, early, including a great breakaway chance by Jenna Smith, who came streaking into the 'Horns end, but her shot would go high and wide.

The Dinos opened the scoring five minutes into play as fourth-year forward Mitschke managed to get her stick on a bouncing puck while falling to her knees, netting her second of the season.

With Megan Bailey in the box for Lethbridge, Smith took no time at all, aggressively jamming the puck into the corner past Patterson to widen her team's lead to two.

Sarah Spence tried to answer back for the Horns, moments later, as she drew the puck wide and across the crease but the Calgary keeper managed to get her stick there in time.

Plagued by penalties in the final minutes of the opening period, Mitschke net her second of the night on a five-on-three.

Less than three minutes into the second, Trencsenyi put a shot on net from just outside the circle and it took an unlucky bounce and skipped past an unsuspecting Williams.

And it didn't stop there. Smith scored her second of the night, unassisted, at 4:57 and five minutes later, took a pass from Jessyka Holt, split the Lethbridge defenders, and went hard to the net, scoring bar-down to complete the hat-trick.

Chelsea Peterson, Alex Gowie, and Stephanie Zvonkevic each added markers for Calgary in the third period.

With this win, the Dinos hold onto their number six spot, improving to 8-10-1 (CW) and gives them an edge on the Horns, now 6-10-3 (CW), headed into playoff season. Game two of the home and home series goes tomorrow night, in Calgary, at Father David Bauer Arena. Game time is set for 7pm and the game will be streamed live at http://canadawest.tv
