‘Horns look to keep playoff hopes alive in Saskatoon

Lethbridge – Coming off a disappointing weekend, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's hockey team heads out on the road for another important set of games, traveling to Saskatoon to face the CIS ninth ranked Saskatchewan Huskies.

Entering last weekend, the 'Horns were tied with the Calgary Dinos for the sixth and final playoff spot, but after earning just a single point in their home-and-home series with the Dinos, the 'Horns find themselves now three points out of that coveted post-season position.

With only eight games remaining in the conference season, every point from here on out is going to be important for the 'Horns if they are to make a push for the playoffs.

Offensively challenged of late, the 'Horns have only scored more than one goal once in their last six contests. Only the Mount Royal Cougars have scored fewer goals than the Pronghorns this season.

Another area of concern for Coach Kaip has to be the play of their specialty teams, where the 'Horns rank last in penalty killing efficiency (80.5%) and second last in power play (6.8%). The 'Horns have not scored a power play goal in their last seven games and are 0 for 24 with the extra skater during those six contests.

The 'Horns do not have a player in the top 20 in conference scoring but they are led by Kirsten Reeves (6 goals, 4 assists), Sadie Lenstra (6 goals, 3 assists) and Sarah Spence (5 goals, 4 assists).

Entering the final four weeks of the regular season, the Huskies are in a dog fight for playoff positioning. At 12-4-2, the Huskies are currently in second place behind the UBC Thunderbirds, but they're only one point ahead of both the Alberta Pandas and Manitoba Bisons. The top two teams in the conference get first round bye in the playoffs.

As expected, the Huskies are strong at both ends of the ice, scoring the second most goals in the conference with 50, while only allowing 36 goals against, the third fewest.

Leading the second ranked offense is Cami Wooster, who sits second on the conference scoring list with 14 goals and nine assists. The Huskies also have the top rookie scorer in Kaitlin Willoughby. Willoughby has seven goals and nine assists in 20 games.

Puck drop for both games in Saskatoon are set from 7:00pm CST at Rutherford Arena in Saskatoon and both games will be streamed live on http://canadawest.tv.
