Saskatoon - Sarah Spence scored the game winner in the 10
th round of a shootout as the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns stunned the No. 9 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies 3-2 Friday night at Saskatoon's Rutherford Rink.
Spence's shootout tally was her third of the shootout as she also scored in rounds seven and eight. After scoring on wrist shots in her previous two attempts, Spence faked a shot and stretched to slide a backhand past a sprawling Karen Lefsrud for the win.
Kandace Cook scored twice for the Huskies in three attempts in the shootout. Spence and Cook scored all of the five combined goals in the shootout.
With the win Lethbridge improves to 7-10-4, while Saskatchewan drops to 12-4-5.
Down 2-1 in the closing minutes of the game, Huskie defenceman Alicia Van Alstyne's first goal of the season could not have come at a better time. Saskatchewan controlled the puck on the power play with under three minutes to go when Kori Herner found Van Alstyne at the blue line. With a pair of Huskies in front Van Alstne sent a high slap shot that Crystal Patterson could barely see fly into the top of the net.
Kirsten Reeves got the game's first goal on the power play at 15:23 of the first period. Megan Bailey walked in from the blue line and let a hard wrist shot go from the top of the face off circle. Lefsrud kicked out her left pad getting just enough of the puck to make the save. Reeves was waiting on the doorstep for the rebound and easily deposited the puck into the Huskie net.
Katie Mucha doubled the Pronghorn lead near the end of the second period with a wrist shot from the top of the circle. Mucha corralled a pass from Megan Bailey, her second assist of the night, and sent a shot over a screened Lefsrud's shoulder at 15:10.
Patterson made 32 saves in net for the Pronghorns. Lefsrud stopped 23 shots for the Huskies.
The two teams meet again tomorrow night in Rutherford Rink at 7 p.m.
