REGINA, Sask. - Jasmin Teske's goal in the first round of the shootout gave the Lethbridge Pronghorns a 3-2 win over the Regina Cougars on Friday night in Canada West women's hockey action at The Co-operators Centre.
Megan Bailey and Sarah Spence scored for Lethbridge in regulation, while the Cougars replied with goals from Tori Head and Bailey Braden. Pronghorns goalie Crystal Patterson made 32 saves in regulation and stopped all three U of R attempts in the shootout while registering an assist on Spence's goal.
Lethbridge improves to 6-8-3 on the season and pulls into a tie with Calgary for sixth in the Canada West standings, though the Dinos are also in action on Friday night with a home game against UBC. The Cougars move to 9-6-2 on the season and remain in fifth place in the conference.
Both teams scored goals directly following offensive zone faceoff wins in the opening 20 minutes. The Cougars opened the scoring just shy of the five-minute mark when Head won a draw and went to the net, ending up with the puck in tight after Nikki Watters-Matthes sent it into slot and chipping it over chipping it over Lethbridge goalie Crystal Patterson for her fourth goal of the season. The assist for Watters-Matthes was her first career CIS point for the Cougars, while Meghan Sherven collected her first of two helpers on the night.
Lethbridge tied it up seven minutes later after a Glenda Edie shot from the point following a faceoff win by Bailey was saved by Cougar goalie Jennifer Schmidt, but Bailey herself pounced on the rebound in the slot and poked it home for her fourth of the year. Both teams fired 11 shots on net in the first.
The visiting Pronghorns had a fine chance to take the lead early in the second period just as a four-on-four situation was expiring when Jenna-Marie Durnin was sent in all alone on a breakaway, but Schmidt was up to the task and made a pad save on Durnin's shot. Lethbridge eventually did break through past the midpoint of the middle frame when Spence led a rush up ice and beat Schmidt glove side with a shot from the slot to give the Pronghorns their first lead of the game.
The Cougars tied it up at 2-2 early in the third period with Lethbridge's Erica Williams in the box serving a tripping minor. Braden jumped on a loose puck to the right of Patterson and her backhander found the net, giving the rookie winger her third of the season and second power play goal of the campaign. Schmidt was then called upon to make several saves as the Pronghorns tried to pull back into the lead, as the third-year goalie stopped Kirsten Reeves on a breakaway a minute after Braden's goal and then made saves off Jasmin Teske, Williams, and Angela Burke in a brief flurry midway through the third. Braden's goal stood as the only goal of the third despite Lethbridge ending up with a big 17-5 shot advantage in the period.
The teams combined for 12 shots in the 10-minute overtime session, but neither squad was able to break through for the game-winning goal. Patterson stopped attempts by Sherven, Brooklyn Moskowy, and Kendra Finch to seal the victory for Lethbridge.
Schmidt tied her season high with 41 saves as Lethbridge held a 43-34 advantage in shots during regulation and overtime. Braden's goal stood as the only power play goal of the game, as the Cougars ended up 1-for-5 with the man advantage and Lethbridge was held scoreless on its four opportunities.
The two teams will play for the fourth and final time of the Canada West schedule on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre (7:00).
