Box Score EDMONTON – The University of Alberta Golden Bears soccer team clinched a berth into the Canada West playoffs thanks to a 3-0 win over the visiting Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday afternoon at Foote Field.
Goals by C.J. Gilroy, Jermele Campbell and Moe Teliani granted Alberta the win, which improved their record to 5-3-3 on the season. The Bears continue to sit in third place in the Prairie Division of Canada West, with one game remaining in their regular season. The top four teams advance to the post-season, and Alberta, with 18 points, cannot be caught by fifth-place MacEwan.
The Bears, however, move up to second or fall down to fourth place, depending on results across the conference. If Alberta manages to win its final game on Sunday, that would put them, temporarily, into second place in the division ahead of Calgary. And, should the Dinos lose out, or split their remaining two games, Alberta would remain in second place and host a playoff game. But a loss on Sunday, combined with wins by Lethbridge in their final games, would see the Bears slip to fourth.
Lethbridge, meanwhile, needs some wins in their final three games in order to clinch. The Pronghorns have 11 points, after falling to 3-4-2 on Saturday, and are tied with MacEwan for the final playoff berth. However, the Horns have a game at hand on MacEwan, as they close out the regular season with games against Alberta (Sunday) and the Calgary next weekend. MacEwan has two games remaining, both against the 2-6-1 Winnipeg Wesmen. Lethbridge, however, does hold the tie breaker against MacEwan, should it come down to that.
On Saturday, Gilroy netted his sixth of the campaign, a team lead, when he scored in the 34
th minute to send the Bears into half-time with a 1-0 lead.
Alberta doubled its lead just four minutes into the second half when Campbell collected a rebound off a Niko Saler shot, danced around Lethbridge 'keeper Peter Desmond, and slotted the ball into the empty net.
Teliani completed the scoring 15 minutes later when he converted a cross from Tyler Graham.
The Bears and 'Horns will clash again on Sunday at 2:15 p.m. at Foote Field.
