Lethbridge – Playing in their inaugural Canada West conference game, the MacEwan University Griffins made an easy transition from the ACAC to Canada West earning a 1-0 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns in Canada West women's soccer action.

Jennifer Lam scored the lone goal of the game.

Despite the 2013 Canadian College National Champions jumping out of the gate on the offensive attack, the 'Horns defensive shape held strong keeping the Griffins at bay during the early going.

The Griffins did however have the first quality opportunity, Shaelan Donovan streaked down the side but her low shot was turned aside by 'Horns keeper Myriah Marino.

Following offensive pushes by both teams, the game would take a drastic change in the 26thminute. With Donovan streaking away from all of the 'Horns defenders, Marino charged off her line, challenging and colliding with Donovan just outside the penalty area.

Marino was sent off with a red card, leaving the 'Horns to play the remainder of the game down to 10 players.

On the ensuing free kick Lam beat defender turned goaltender Kim Shellenberg to score the Griffins first ever Canada West goal.

The Griffins went right back offensively, testing the 'Horns new keeper, but Shellenberg was equal to the task.

Even though the 'Horns were down a player, they nearly tied the game late in the opening half. Off a corner kick, Jaime Nadeau collected a loose ball but her shot found the waiting hands of Griffins keeper Madison Perry.

A strong effort defending by the Pronghorns and surprisingly solid goalkeeping from Shellenberg kept the Griffins at bay in the second half, but the 'Horns were unable to surmount much of a offensive attack in the final 45 minutes.

Perry made two saves to earn both her first Canada West win and clean sheet, while Marino made three saves before her departure. Shellenberg turned aside nine Griffin shots, including a stellar diving save off of Donovan early into the second half.

The loss drops the 'Horns record to 0-3-1 on the season and the Griffins will travel to Calgary to face the Calgary Dinos tomorrow afternoon looking to build off their first conference victory.
