'Horns rebound to claim first victory

Winnipeg - The University of Lethbrige Pronghorns defeated the hometown Winnipeg Wesmen 3-1 Saturday night at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex in Winnipeg.

Lethbridge with the win picks up their first regular season victory of the season. The Pronghorns sit with a record of 1-5-2. Winnipeg with the loss drops to 1-5.

Kaitlin Doiron, Meaghan Welby and Stephanie Groten added goals for the Pronghorns. Danielle Comeau was the goal scorer for the Wesmen.

The Pronghorns carried the play in the opening 10 minutes of the contest keeping constant pressure on the Wesmen.

The hard work by ther Pronghorns turned into a goal in the 28th mninute when second year defender Kaitlin Doiron took a feed from Meaghan Welby to open the scoring.

The lone goal was the only tally in the opening 45 minutes.

Welby hit the scoresheet in the 59th minute beating Wesmen goalkeeper Taylor Thorkelsson to extend the Pronghorns lead to 2-0.

Winnipeg found their offense in the 63rd minute as danielle Comeau took a feed from Laura Carroll in the slot and beat Pronghorns goalkeeper Myriah Marino to cut the defecit to 2-1.

The comeback was short lived as in extra time Stepahnie Groten scored to put the game out of the reach making the final tally 3-1.

Lethbridge took a total of 13 shots, compared to eight for Winnipeg. Both goalies made four saves for their respective teams.

The Pronghorns will visit the Saskatchewan Huskies next Friday and Sunday. Winnipeg will visit Calgary to face the Dinos next Saturday and Sunday
