Box Score Lethbridge – With their playoff lives hanging in the balance, the Lethbridge Pronghorns opened a weekend set with an important 2-1 win over the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen.
The win moves the Pronghorns to 3-5-1 on the season and five points behind Saskatchewan Huskies for the final playoff spot but the 'Horns hold a game in hand on the Huskies. The loss official eliminates the Wesmen from playoff contention and drops their record to 1-7-1.
Allan Siwela and Kendal Wiens scored for the Pronghorns, while Prince Amara responded for the Wesmen.
In a must win game for the Pronghorns, they opened the game with good pace but Winnipeg was happy to go back in forth with them. The teams traded rushes and corners for the first 25 minutes with the 'Horns having four corners and the Wesmen three.
Allan Siwela opened the scoring for the 'Horns, taking the ball just outside the thirty yard line, making one move and picking the low right corner from long range. It was his third goal in the last two games.
The Wesmen nearly responded immediately following the 'Horns goal. 'Horns keeper Nolan French came a long way off his line to punch the ball away but caught out of position. Braden Silva attempted to chip over the out of position French but defender Curtis Contenti was on the goal line to head the ball to safety.
The 'Horns would double their lead before the half was out. Kendell Wiens received a pass just outside the penalty area and muscled past a pair of Wesmen defenders before depositing the ball into the low left corner.
Early in the second half, the Wesmen caught a break, Aaron Hidalgo-Mazzei's cross hit Prince Amara in the box and redirected past a surprised French, to cut the 'Horns lead in half.
A short time later, the Wesmen went down to 10 men for the final 40 minutes, after a red card was issued to Richard Rundle.
Even playing a man down, the Wesmen came dangerously close to tying the game off a corner kick. Amos Ganyea elevated to get his head on the ball but just missed the far post.
With six minutes remaining, the Wesmen nearly tied the game again Amos Ganyea sprinted away from the pack, going one-on-one with 'Horns keeper French but Ganyea's sailed wide.
The 'Horns and Wesmen will wrap up their weekend series tomorrow afternoon, kick-off is scheduled for 2:15pm at the University Community Stadium.
