Box Score EDMONTON - For the second-straight game, the #7 University of Alberta Golden Bears suffered a 2-0 loss at home, this time dropping the decision against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns to end the regular season for both squads, Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.
The loss drops Alberta to 8-4 on the season, giving the team second place in the Prairie Division standings, providing them hosting duties next weekend in a one-game quarter-final against the 5-4-3 Fraser Valley Cascades. Lethbridge finishes outside the playoffs in the Prairie Division with a 5-5-2 record.Â
Third-year midfielder Dominique Point du Jour scored the winner while rookie striker Taylor Laviolette added the insurance marker.
Â
Bears sophomore netminder Connor James made five saves in the loss, finishing the season with a goals against average of 1.25 and a save percentage of .746.
Â
This afternoon's game was fairly quiet until the second half, the two teams playing defensively for the opening 45 minutes, a seemingly harmless play by Point du Jour resulting in the game's first goal.
Â
Covered defensively, the Calgary native put the right spin on the ball to sail a perfect shot into the top far corner from 30 yards out in the 56th minute.
Â
From then on, Lethbridge forged ahead with the momentum, Point du Jour finding sophomore striker Kendell Wiens in the middle in the 65th minute, the 6'3", 220-pound athlete narrowly missing wide.
Â
Wiens followed with some amazing footwork in the 70th minute to get clear of Alberta defenders, forcing James to make a tough point-blank save but Laviolette picked up the rebound for the 2-0 score.
Â
The Golden Bears were unable to counter, the Pronghorn defence giving no chances so that the visitors could end their season with a victory.
