Lethbridge – Fourth-year midfielder provided all the offense and on the strength of his first Canada West hat-trick propelled the Lethbridge Pronghorns to an important 3-2 win over the Calgary Dinos at the University Community Stadium in Lethbridge.
The win lifts the Pronghorns to 2-4-0 on the season and keeps their playoff aspirations alive. The loss drops the Dinos to 3-2-1.
The Dinos took advantage of a Pronghorn own goal and Dominick Zator scored the other Dino marker.
Statistically the opening half looked even and while the visitors enjoyed a slight territorial advantage, it was the Pronghorns who would hit the scoresheet first. In 37th minute, Dom Point du Jour swung the ball into the penalty area, and Rushworth dove to get his head on the ball and directed it into the lower right corner.
The Dinos nearly opened the scoring only eight minutes earlier off one of their seven opening half corners but Dominic Russo's header when off the crossbar.
In the half, the Dinos held a 6-5 shot attempt advantage but the 'Horns hit the net on four of their five shot attempts compared to the Dinos who only forced Nolan French into two saves.
Rushworth doubled the 'Horns lead in the 66th minute, triggering a crazy run of four goals in five minutes. 'Horns midfielder Sean Gaiesky stole the ball near midfield and lead the ball to Rushworth, who cut to his left and picked the far side.
Immediately off the restart, the Dinos caught a break and cut the 'Horns lead in half with an own goal. Dino Jared Fillo cut the ball into the box and a ricochet off 'Horns defender Curtis Contenti and in.
Riding that momentum, the Dinos knotted the score at two only two minutes later from a set piece. From the left flank, Robin Whittaker played the ball into the box, finding the head of Dominic Zator.
Continuing a hectic stretch, Rushworth knotted his third of the game, regaining the 'Horns lead in the 71st minute, picking the low corner from just inside the DInos box.
Dinos has a great opportunity to tie the game back up in the 81st minute with a free kick from just outside the penalty area but Mark Bohdan's shot was high.
Point du Jour looked to put the game way with only six minutes remaining. Point du Jour ran onto a Dom Riguax pass for a clear break but Colin Hasick came out to make a great sliding save to keep the Dinos within one.
That save from Hasick nearly paid off for the Dinos, in injury time, French made a point blank save off of Bohdan to seal the win for the 'Horns. French finished with six saves on the day to earn his first Canada West win.
The 'Horns head out on the road next weekend, traveling to Saskatoon for a pair of games versus the defending Canada West Champion Saskatchewan Huskies. The Dinos face a pair of games versus cross town rival Mount Royal Cougars.
