‘Horns look to end slide before semester break

Lethbridge – Mired in a six-game losing streak the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's hockey team will close out the first semester of conference action hosting the Alberta Pandas for a pair of games at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

Puck drop is set for 7:00pm Friday night and 1:00pm Saturday afternoon and both games will be webcast on www.canadawest.tv, home to all Canada West webcasts.

Despite suffering their sixth consecutive loss last Saturday, the 'Horns (5-6-2-1) did have some positives to take away. They earned their first point in six games with the overtime loss to the Regina Cougars and ended a long scoreless drought with two goals in the 3-2 loss. Every point earned from here on out is important in the ultra-tight Canada West conference as only five points separate first to seventh place rankings.

Following the scoreless drought, the 'Horns have now scored the second fewest goals in the conference with 26 goals in 14 games, while allowing 33 goals against.

Lauren Fredrich and Jocelyn Sabourin remain team leaders in points with eight and seven respectively, but Aislinn Kooistra's goal last weekend now draws her into a tie with Fredrich and Tricia Van Vaerenbergh for the team lead in goals with four.

In the crease, Alicia Anderson made back-to-back starts last weekend after splitting duties with Jessica Lohues the previous two weeks. Anderson holds a 2.35 goals-against average and a 0.929 save percentage in 12 appearances.

The Pandas (8-5-0-1) will be looking for some revenge on the Pronghorns this weekend after being swept by the 'Horns earlier this season in Edmonton. The 'Horns beat the Pandas 3-2 and 3-1.

Statistically, the Pandas are the second best defensive team in the conference, allowing 22 goals against in 14 games. Panda goaltender Lindsey Post holds the best goals-against-average in the conference at 1.48. She also leads the league in shutouts with a total of three.

The Pandas' attack is led by Alex Poznikoff and Janelle Froehler with 10 and nine points respectively. Poznikoff is second in the league with eight goals.

To open the second half of the conference schedule, the 'Horns will head out on the road, traveling to Saskatchewan to face the Huskies. The 'Horns will host the Regina Cougars at home on January 15th and 16th.
