Box Score Lethbridge - The Alberta Golden Bears scored three goals in each half to open the 2015 Canada West season with a convincing 6-1 win on the road versus the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
2014 Canada West silver medalist Bears were led by a hat trick from Mohamed Teliani and a two goal performance from Shamit Shome, while Tolu Esan scored the other Bears goal. Â Riley Flint scored the lone Pronghorn goal.
From the opening kick-off, the Bears looked poised and confident, taking control of the pace early, which turned out to be the theme for the day. The 'Horns look tight and tentative throughout the match and never got on track.
The Bears finished the game with 15 shot attempts to the 'Horns eight, while the Horns committed 13 fouls to the Bears four.
Eight minutes in, Ajay Khabra sprung Esan for the game's opening goal. With Esan in alone, he made no mistake picking the low corner past 'Horns keeper Ben Spendlove.
Shamit Shome doubled the Bears lead, scoring his first of two in the opening half. Spendlove came out to challenge Niko Saler but he slipped the ball to an open Esan for a tap in.
Shome scored his second of the half in the 37
th minute to push the score to 3-0.
Off a corner early in the second half, the Bears nearly made it 4-0, but Spendlove made great save off an in-tight shot from Khabra.
The Bears would not be denied that fourth goal for long. Esan would hit Teliani with a long range cross from fifty yards out and Teliani tucked it into the far corner.
In the 68
th minute, Teliani picked up his second goal from the penalty spot after, Stefan Bozunovic was taken down in the box.
The 'Horns final got on the board in the 74
th minute, ruining Conner James' clean sheet. Flint picked the low left corner from just inside the penalty area.
Teliani completed his hat trick and rounded out the scoring in the 82
nd minute, volleying home a cross from the six-yard box.
Spendlove finished the day with five saves, while his counterpart, James made three saves in the win.
The Bears will now travel to Saskatoon to take on the Saskatchewan Huskies Sunday afternoon, in a rematch of last year's Canada West Championship game. The Huskies beat the Bears, 4-2 to win the Canada West title.
The 'Horns will remain at home, hosting the MacEwan Griffins Sunday afternoon as well. Kick-off is at 2:15.
