Box Score REGINA, Sask. - A stifling Cougar defence and Sienne Krynowsky's 11th minute goal helped the University of Regina women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns at the U of R Field on Saturday.
Lethbridge managed 10 shots in the game, but the Cougar back line held the Pronghorns to just one effort on goal. The only ball that tested Ashton Lowry was a long shot from Lindsay Amatto that the Cougar keeper handled with ease.
Regina countered with 19 shots, six of which were on goal. Krynowsky was responsible for six of those shots, while Brianna Wright, Karlee Vorrieter and Lauren Petras each had three.
The Cougars had a glorious opportunity to take an early lead as Krynowsky was hauled down in the box in the seventh minute. The Cougars were awarded a penalty kick, but Krynowsky's shot was handled by a diving Paige Gattafoni.
Krynowsky would make up for her missed opportunity just four minutes later, giving the Cougars the jump on the Pronghorns. Wright crossed the ball into the box from the left wing, and it bounced just past the foot of Vorrieter. Fortunately for the Cougars, Krynowsky was in the right spot, and she put a high shot past the outstretched glove of Gattafoni for her first goal of the season.
The Cougars nearly added to their lead in the 29th minute, as Vorrieter made a neat move to get around a Pronghorn defender and went down the right wing on a partial break. Her shot hooked just inches too far, narrowly missing the far post.
Regina moves to 2-3-2 with the win, leapfrogging Lethbridge in the Canada West Prairie Division standings. The Cougars will square off against Calgary (6-0-1) on Sunday. The Dinos battled the Saskatchewan Huskies to a 1-1 draw on Saturday in Saskatoon.
