Lethbridge – Heading into the final weekend of season the 'Horns are in a battle for the final playoff positioning but face an uphill climb as they take on two nationally ranked opponents on the road this weekend.
The 'Horns (3-7-2) take on the CIS second ranked and undefeated Trinity Western Spartans in Langley Friday night at 5:00 PST. Saturday night, the 'Horns take on the ninth ranked Fraser Valley Cascades. Kick-off is scheduled for 5:30 PST.
A log jam in the Prairie Division has four teams battling it out for three playoff spots and the 'Horns are only a single point behind the Regina Cougars, Winnipeg Wesmen and Manitoba Bisons. The Bisons and Wesmen both face the UBC Thunderbirds and Victoria Vikes, while the Cougars have easiest schedule of the four teams, facing the bottom two teams in the Pacific Division, Thompson Rivers WolfPack and UNBC Timberwolves.
Statistically, the 'Horns have a minus three in goal differential with 12 goals for and 15 goals against but have only allowed three goals against in their last four games.
Offensively, Nikki Furukawa has been the catalyst for the Pronghorns attack, scoring half of her team's goals with six.
The Spartans (10-0-2) have had a dominant season thus far, outscoring their opponents 28 to five and their only blemishes have been a 0-0 tie with Victoria and a 1-1 tie with UBC. They have also shutout teams eight times in 12 games thus far.
Offensively, while Isabella Di Trocchio leads the Spartans with seven goals, a balanced attack has propelled the Spartans this season. The Spartans have 10 other players that have registered at least one goal and five that have scored three times.
Sunday's opponent, the Fraser Valley Cascades (8-2-2) are tied for second in the Prairie Division with the Alberta Pandas but have already clinched a playoff spot. The Cascades only two losses in conference play have been to the Spartans.
Unlike the Spartans, three players have been responsible for the bulk of the Cascades scoring. Monika Levarsky, Amanda Carruthers and Gurneet Dhaliwal account for 70% of the Cascades 30 goals this season. Levarsky is second in Canada West scoring with 10 goals, while Carruthers has six and Dhaliwal has five goals entering this week's action.
