Lethbridge – Nearing the midpoint of the season, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's soccer team heads out to Saskatchewan for a pair of key games versus the Regina Cougars and Saskatchewan Huskies.
The 'Horns face the Cougars at 11:00 am Saturday morning and the Huskies Sunday at Noon.
With eight games remaining, the 'Horns (2-4-0) sit in fifth in the Prairie Division and with six teams qualifying for playoffs, every point will be at a premium from here on out.
Last weekend the 'Horns split the weekend set, losing 2-1 to the Manitoba Bisons before rebounding with a 4-1 win over the Winnipeg Wesmen.
So far the 'Horns have scored the second most goals in the division with nine in six games and have only allowed eight goals against.
Nikki Furukawa continues to lead the 'Horns attack scoring four goals in six games, but newcomer Nanami Wakayama had a break-out weekend last week scoring once and adding two assists for her first points of her Canada West career.
Through six games themselves, the Cougars (1-3-2) are one of the stingiest teams in the division in spite of their seventh place standing. In those six games, the Cougars have only allowed four goals against but have also shown an inability to score themselves, only registering two goals for.
The Cougars are coming off a pair of 1-0 losses in their last action losing to Mount Royal and MacEwan University.
Sunday will mark the first meeting between the 'Horns and Huskies (3-3-0) since the Huskies beat the 'Horns 3-0 in the first round of the Canada West playoffs last season. The 'Horns did beat the Huskies, 2-1 during the regular season last season.
Last weekend the Huskies split their weekend series, losing 1-0 to the MacEwan Griffins, before beating the Mount Royal Cougars 1-0.
In six games, the Huskies have scored six times and allowed 11 goals against, but eight of those goals allowed came during the opening weekend when they lost a pair of 4-0 games to the Trinity Western Spartans and the Fraser Valley Cascades.
Erica Hindmarsh and Meagan Manson lead the Huskies attack with two goals apiece.
Next weekend, the 'Horns will play the conference's top team, the Calgary Dinos in a home-and-home series, starting Saturday in Lethbridge.
