Langley - The Lethbridge Pronghorn women's soccer team's season came to a end Thursday night during the opening round of the playoffs with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the Fraser Valley Cascades on Trinity Western University's campus.

Janelle Henke scored the lone goal of the game in the 84th minute. The Cascades now move on a face the Trinity Western Spartans in a Canada West quarter-final match up.

Despite the disappointing loss, there are a lot of positives the Pronghorns will take away from the 2017 season. Their 5-7-2 regular season record is their best since the 2007 season when the Pronghorns finished 5-4-5. 16 goals scored is also the most they have scored as a team since the 2005 season.

Throughout the 90 minutes, the Pronghorns struggled to find any rhythm offensively but had an outstanding effort defensively to keep the Cascades attack at bay for the majority of the match.

In a scoreless opening half, the Cascades held a 6-2 advantage in shot attempts but both teams hit the net twice.

Lindsay Amatto and Nikki Furukawa each had a shot on goal, while 'Horns keeper Micaela Stone turned aside shots from Janelle Henke and Gurneet Dhaliwal.

The Cascades also had three corners in the half, while the Pronghorns did not register a corner in the half.

To the start the second half, the Cascades dictated the pace but the Pronghorns defence would bend but not break, keeping the game scoreless into the final seven minutes of play.

After having a goal disallowed only minutes earlier on a offside, the Cascades broke the deadlock with just over six minutes to play. Karlee Pedersen crossed the ball in from the left, the ball took a big bounce in the Pronghorns box and Henke was able to head the over Stone as she was challenging off her line.

The goal by Henke was the lone shot registered by either team in the second half in what turned out to be a defensive battle.

At the final whistle the Cascades had six shot attempts to the Pronghorns two. Both keepers finished with two saves and the Cascades held a distinct advantage in the corner kick column, 5-0.
