Lethbridge – The offensive woes for the Lethbridge Pronghorns continued as they dropped another close game, falling 1-0 to the Regina Cougars in the first game of a two game set in Lethbridge this weekend.
The loss is the Pronghorns seventh one goal loss of the season and the fifth time they have been shutout, dropping their record to 2-6-2-1. While it was only the Cougars first goal in three games, it was enough for the victory, snapping a four game losing and improves their record to 6-6-0-1.
Pronghorn goaltender Alicia Anderson was once again her team's best player, keeping the Pronghorns in the game for the full 60 minutes and making 38 saves in the loss. Her counterpart Jane Kish earned her second shutout of the seasons, turning aside all 16 she faced.
While on a power play late in the opening period, the Cougars opened the scoring, picking up their first goal in three games. Emma Waldenberger's shot from the point eluded a screened Alicia Anderson for her team leading fifth of the season.
Controlling majority of the play in the first period, Regina outshot Lethbridge 14-5.
The second period continued with much of the same with the Pronghorns struggling to find their offensive game but Alicia Anderson, like she has done all season, kept her team within striking distance. In a scoreless second period, a late flurry and power play allowed them to narrow the gap in shots in the period but were still outshot 11 to 6 in the second stanza.
Regina continued to look for an insurance marker early in the third, getting six early shots and were nearly rewarded on a crazy goal mouth scramble but the puck was swept off the line.
Just past the midway point of the third period, the Pronghorns were finally able to get some sustained time in the offensive zone and nearly tied the game. Kirana Stocker's shot from the points was redirected in front but slid out of harm's way.
Finally showing some desperation, the Pronghorns pressured Regina but as they had all night, could not break through the Cougars' defence and were only able to get three shots in the final period.
The Pronghorns will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon versus the Regina Cougars, puck drops at 3:00pm at Nicholas Sheran Arena. Game will also streamed live on
