During the opening weekend of the season, the Pronghorns suffered two close losses at the hands of the Saskatchewan Huskies, 1-0 and 2-1. Despite the stats in both games being nearly identical, newcomer Ellis Davies was the lone Pronghorn to find the back of the net on the weekend. Matt Vandervoort got both starts in the Pronghorns net, stopped seven of the 10 Huskie shots on goal.

"We are looking to bounce back from a weekend in Saskatoon where the guys deserved a better fate," said head coach Randy Bardock. "The guys are excited to get back at it and test themselves against the defending National Champions."

A season ago, the Pronghorns were the lone team to beat the Golden Bears enroute to the schools five national men's soccer championships. The 'Horns beat the Bears 1-0 in Edmonton during the second last weekend of the regular season. The Bears had beaten the Pronghorns 3-2 earlier that season in Lethbridge.

The Pronghorns swept the Griffins last season, winning both games 2-0.

The Bears (2-0), ranked first in the USPORTS first top ten poll of the season, opened their defense of the Canada West and USPORTS titles with a pair of road wins, beating the Mount Royal Cougars 1-0 before easily handling the Calgary Dinos 5-0 on Sunday.

Picking up where he left off, 2016 Canada West Player of the Year and leading goal scorer Ajeej Sarkaria scored once in each game last weekend for the Bears and also recorded two assists in the win over the Dinos.

For the Griffins, the opening weekend came with mixed results. In their opening game, the Griffins dropped a tough 2-1 decision to the Dinos, but in their second game, the Griffins scored three goals in the final 10 minutes of play to come from behind and beat the Mount Royal Cougars 3-2.

Lahai Mansary scored three of his team's four goals on the weekend to sit tied for the conference's goal scoring lead after the first weekend of Canada West play.

The Pronghorns will return home next week to host southern Alberta rival Calgary Dinos and Mount Royal Cougars. The 'Horns will host the Dinos Thursday night at 7:00pm and then face the Cougars Saturday afternoon at 2:15 pm.
