Lethbridge – The Lethbridge Pronghorn men's soccer team hits the mid-point of the 2017 Canada West season this weekend, heading out on the road for a pair of games versus Pacific Division schools.
Friday night the 'Horns hit the pitch versus the Trinity Western Spartans in Langley, kick-off is slated for 6:00pm Pacific time. The Pronghorns will wrap up their second-last road trip Sunday afternoon in Kamloops versus the Thompson Rivers WolfPack at 2:00pm Pacific. Both games will be webcast on
www.canadawest.tv.
The Pronghorns (1-3-2) have earned points in three of their last four games but currently sit one spot out of the playoffs and will need to string some wins together to qualify for the post-season dance again this season. Three of the four teams ahead of the Pronghorns hold games in hand on the 'Horns.
Through six conference games this season, the Pronghorns have scored six times, while allowing nine goals against, with newcomer Ellis Davies leading the team in goals with two. Fourth-year midfielder Stephen Primeau leads the team with three assists, including assisting on both goals this past weekend.
Last season, the Pronghorns lost 2-1 to Thompson Rivers in Kamloops, but didn't face the Spartans. In their last match-up with the Spartans during the 2012 season, the Pronghorns lost 2-0 in Langley.
Trinity Western (2-1-3) sits second in the Pacific Division and enters this weekend following a scoreless draw with the WolfPack and a 2-1 win over the UBCO Heat last weekend.
So far this season, the Spartans have scored nine goals for and allowed six goals against. Fourth-year forward Leighton Johnson leads the Spartans and is tied for the Canada West lead with four goals.
Sunday afternoon, the Pronghorns face one of the highest scoring teams in the conference this season, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack (2-1-3). The WolfPack are tied for the conference lead in goals scored with 11. Alberta has also scored 11 goals for, but have played two fewer games than Thompson Rivers.
The WolfPack's scoring has been for the most part by committee so far this season, with eight players scoring at least one goal, but Mitchell Popadynetz is the team's offensive catalyst. Popadynetz has had a hand in seven of his team's 11 goals with three goals and four assists. His seven points leads Canada West.
The Pronghorns will return home next weekend, hosting the Fraser Valley Cascades and UNBC Timberwolves.
