Lethbridge – Looking to push for a playoff spot for the second year in a row, the Lethbridge Pronghorn men's soccer team will play their final home games of the 2017 Canada West season, hosting the U SPORTS top ranked Alberta Golden Bears and MacEwan Griffins.
The Pronghorns will clash with the Bears Friday afternoon at 2:00pm and then face the MacEwan Griffins Sunday at 2:15 to conclude the home portion of this season's schedule. Both games are at the University Community Stadium and will be webcast on
www.canadawest.tv.
In their last action, the Pronghorns (2-6-2) ended a three-game losing streak with a 1-0 win over the UNBC Timberwolves, but still trail the Calgary Dinos in winning percentage for the final playoff spot in the Prairie Division. The Dinos and Mount Royal Cougars, who are in third, both have two games in hand on the Pronghorns. The Dinos and Cougars face each other this weekend in a home-and-home series.
On the strength of his winning goal on Sunday from the penalty spot, Dominique Point du Jour leads the Pronghorns with three goals and is tied for the team lead in points with Stephen Primeau with five. Both Primeau and Ellis Davies each have two goals to sit second the Pronghorns in goals.
Friday's opponent, the Alberta Golden Bears (6-1-1) come to town as the defending U SPORTS champion and are the #1 ranked team in the country, but the Bears suffered their first loss of the season last Saturday, dropping a 2-0 decision to the visiting Trinity Western Spartans. The only other point a team has taken from the Bears this season was the Pronghorns in a 1-1 tie in Edmonton.
Reigning Canada West Player of the Year Ajeej Sarkaria leads the Bears attack with four goals and five assists. Tidu Esan and Ajay Khabra both have three goals for the Bears thus far.
Sunday, the Pronghorns take on the MacEwan Griffins (1-6-1), who sit sixth in the Prairie Division. In their last action, the Griffins snapped a five game losing streak with a 2-2 tie with the Fraser Valley Cascades. The Pronghorns beat the Griffins in Edmonton earlier this season, 2-1 in Edmonton.
With eight goals for this season, the Griffins are tied for the fewest goals scored in Canada West. Lahai Mansaray is the lone Griffin with more than one goal and has accounted for exactly half of the Griffins output with four goals.
The Pronghorns will be off next week and then play their final games of the season against the two teams they are chasing for a playoff spot, traveling to Calgary to face the Cougars and Dinos.
