On the strength of a 41 save performance from Alicia Anderson, the Pronghorns (1-1-0) opened the season last Saturday with a 2-0 shutout victory over the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver. The T-Birds rebounded the next day to beat the Pronghorns 3-1.
Fourth-year forward Tricia Van Vaerenbergh scored in both games to lead the Pronghorns with two goals in two games. Kyra Greig scored the other goal for the Pronghorns.
In their opening weekend, the Pronghorns were solid on specialty teams, killing off all 11 UBC power plays and with the power play, scoring twice in their 11 chances.
The Cougars (1-1) also split their opening series, beating the Mount Royal Cougars 3-2 in the season opener, before falling by the exact same score the next night.
Emma Waldenberger and Jaycee Magwood lead the Cougars with three points each. Waldenberger scored twice, while Magwood scored the game winning goal on Friday.
Jen Kish was in goal Friday night, stopping 18 shots in the win and Morgan Baker made 20 saves in Saturday's loss.
A season ago, the Cougars won three of four games versus the Pronghorns with one being an overtime win.
