Battle for playoff position looms in Vancouver for Pronghorns

1/29/2020 11:00:00 AM

LETHBRIDGE – Snapping a losing skid a weekend ago, the Lethbridge Pronghorn women's hockey team now sets their sights on a playoff position, facing the team directly in front of them, visiting the UBC Thunderbirds for a pair of games in Vancouver.

The Pronghorns and Thunderbirds will hit the ice at Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre, Friday night at 7:00 pm PT and Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm PT. Catch all the action on www.canadawest.tv, presented by Co-op.

UBC handed the Pronghorns a pair of losses earlies this season in Lethbridge and the Pronghorns will be looking to return the favour.

A look at the teams:

With a regulation win on Friday over the MRU Cougars, the Pronghorns (7-13-1-3) moved within four points of the UBC Thunderbirds for the final playoff spot in Canada West and with two regulation time wins this weekend would over take the T-Birds for the last spot.

The Pronghorns are also only six points back of the Mount Royal Cougars for fifth with four games to play.

In her next appearance in the Pronghorns crease, fifth-year goaltender Alicia Anderson will tie for Pronghorns Crystal Patterson for the Canada West lead in career appearances by a goaltender. Last Saturday night, Anderson became the Canada West all-time leader in minutes played by a goaltender, passing former Saskatchewan Huskie Cassidy Hendricks.

Third-year forward Kyra Greig continues to lead the Pronghorns attack with five goals and 11 assists.

Wins have also been hard to come by for the Thunderbirds (8-11-1-4) having only won one of their last 11 games, snapping a nine game losing streak two weekends ago in Winnipeg. The T-Birds were swept last weekend by the Saskatchewan Huskies at home in Vancouver.

Tory Micklash has seen the bulk of the action in the T-Birds goal this season, playing in 22 games and has played the third most minutes in the conference this season behind Anderson and Calgary's Kelsey Roberts.

Hannah Clayton-Carroll leads the Thunderbirds in scoring with eight goals and eight assists and had four points in two games versus the Pronghorns during the two game series during the first semester.
