Box Score It was a win, yet still a work in progress for the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns women's basketball team.
The Horns topped the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack 76-39 in Canada West play Friday night at the 1st Choice Savings Centre. The win was the Pronghorns third in a row and improves them to 4-3, but head coach Dave Waknuk noted some areas of improvement as the teams hit the hardwood for the weekend finale Saturday night.
"I think I liked parts of it," said Waknuk. "I think for us it's just going to be looking for quality of play. I think there was a moment in the third quarter when we only had five points in five minutes. I think those are areas where I know you're being picky in a win, but we I think have to be as coaches and a program. We can still be better. I thought our intensity was good. I like the way we came through that offensive lull. I thought defensively we played well. Any time you can hold a team to 39 (points), you take that. But I think there are still some things to work on. I feel like it's just trying to find our tempo and our speed consistently. But overall, we'll take that as a starting point, but I think we can still be better."
The Pronghorns opened up a 16-10 lead after the first quarter and 35-24 lead at halftime. Despite going silent offensively in the third quarter, the hosts were able to close it out for the win that that puts the Horns back above the .500 mark.
Fifth-year veteran Jessica Haenni led the Pronghorns with a 21-point outing that included going five-for-eight (.625) from the three-point line and .583 from the field. She also had four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Fellow fifth-year veteran Haily Weaver had a 12-point night to go along with four rebounds and two assists. Millay Johnson also hit double digits with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Tobore Olome grabbed a team-high nine boards in Friday's win. Abby Graves had eight rebounds.
The Horns had 43 rebounds and 17 turnovers.
"We just had to keep challenging that we couldn't be happy with the result, we want the execution to be at our level," said Waknuk. "I think the turnover number was one that I was a little bit concerned with, it was a little bit high for us. So something like that is a controllable mistake. We had to challenge them to bring that number down. The rebound number was tied at the half, so can we bring that number up. We're happy with what we're getting, but the challenge is for them to be their best all-around."
The Pronghorns go for the sweep Saturday. Tip-off is 5 p.m.
"It's what every coach says, they want that 40-minute effort," said Waknuk. "For us, it's still trying to find that 40-minute consistency at both ends. It's getting closer and I'm happy from the last time we played here (at home) until now. I feel like there's an improvement, for sure. So for us, it's to keep growing and keep getting better. But it's just finding the consistency in effort and energy - defensively and offensively - and taking care of the basketball."
Waknuk credited the WolfPack for a tough game played. "They competed right until the end and they'll compete (Saturday). We know that, so we still have to be ready. You can't take anyone for granted in this league. They're well-coached, disciplined, they're tough defensively and they make you earn everything. They made us earn everything today and I give them a lot of credit for that. We have to throw this one out and we just have to be locked in for (Saturday)."
The Pronghorns shot 41.5 per cent from the field, 76.5 per cent on free throws and 34.6 per cent from beyond the arc.
