LETHBRIDGE – Horns Women's Soccer battled to earn a 3-2 victory against the Winnipeg Wesmen in their first Canada West action of the 2023-2024 season at the University of Lethbridge Community Stadium.

The Pronghorn bench jumped to their feet, when they thought they had scored an early goal in the second minute of their first Canada West game. The goal was ultimately called offside, which led to a Winnipeg drive resulting in a score by third-year Wesmen, Jazmyn Castro.

The Horns evened the score at minute nine with a goal by Rylie Mooney off a pass from Lucy Mundy. The Wesmen took a lead again at minute thirty-two with a goal from Madisyn Furber, assisted by Brianna Machado. The Horns nearly missed a chance to tie the game, as Hailey Slobodian sent the ball narrowly over the crossbar late in the first half of play.

In second half play, the Horns returned to the field with a chip on the shoulder and were dominant, keeping the play in the opposing zone. Persistence paid off, as the Horns were awarded a penalty kick. Lucy Mundy finished the kick to make it 2-2 in the fifty-third minute of play. Pronghorns didn't let up, as Tory Clements scored to give the home team the lead off an assist from veteran goalkeeper, Bridie Harding. First-year Pronghorn, Nicola Hutton and third-year Alexis Bradford had good looks to add the Pronghorn lead late in the match, but a strong performance from first-year goalkeeper, Madison Priebe kept the Wesmen to within one to end the game.

NEXT UP: Pronghorn Women's Soccer(1-0-0) finish the weekend with a match on Sunday, August 27 at the University of Lethbridge Community Stadium against the Manitoba Bisons at 12 p.m. mst.
