'Horns shutout by Wesmen in season opener

Box Score Winnipeg - The University of Winnipeg Wesmen Men's Soccer team were victorious in their 2014 regular season home opener. The Wesmen scored three second half goals to lift them to a 4-0 shutout win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns Friday evening at the Winnipeg Soccer Complex in Winnipeg.

Fifth year forward Ross Pinhammer scored the lone goal in the first half in the 4th minute of play. Adam Bromley (56th minute), Braden Silva (65th minute) and Arber Hashanin (69th minute) found the back of the net in the second half.

Winnipeg with the victory improves to 1-2 while the Pronghorns drop their opening match of the regular season to sit at 0-1.

Pinhammer opened the scoring in the match taking a great pass from Amos Ganyea and beat Pronghorns goalkeeper Tyler Boast with a shot to the top right corner to give the Wesmen a 1-0 lead. The teams were unable to sustain any offensive pressure for the middle part of the frame. Winnipeg had a glorious chance to extend their lead when Scott Ansell took a feed from Ganyea but rang it off the post to keep the score 1-0 at the halftime break.

In the second half Adam Bromley took a pass from Scott Ansell and raced in to beat Boast with a perfect shot to extend the Wesmen lead to 2-0. Winnipeg continued to put pressure on the Pronghorns and it paid off. First year midfielder Braden Silva buried a shot past the Pronghorns goalkeeper for his first goal of the season to put Winnipeg ahead 3-0 in the 65th minute. Second year midfielder Arber Hashanin closed out the scoring, capitalizing on a penalty kick in the 69th minute of play.

Wesmen goalkeeper Joshua Partaker made four saves to pick up the shutout. Boast made three saves in the net for Lethbridge.

The two teams will wrap up their weekend series Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.
