LETHBRIDGE – The Lethbridge Pronghorn track and field team wrapped up the 2019 university season this past weekend and returned home with three national medals.
"The weekend was great as we had some strong performances from some of our younger athletes which bodes well for the future and obviously the medal performances were welcomed," said Pronghorn head coach Larry Steinke. "Great Composure and personal bests posted by Sandy, Andreas Tanessa and Ben were the highlights."
"Two instances of officials mistakes meant Ben losing his last three throws results and Andreas losing the silver medal did dampen the spirits a bit but everyone will rebound as better athletes next season."
Third-year Pronghorn Sandra Latrace continued her stellar university career, bringing home two U SPORTS gold medals to lead the way for the Pronghorns. Latrace opened the meet in spectacular fashion winning the 60 metre dash for the first time in her career. In the finals, she won the race with a time of 7.42 second, which would have been a new personal best except she had run a personal best time of 7.40 seconds in the preliminary round.
Entering the meet as a two-time gold medalist in the long jump, Latrace continued her dominance in the event, winning her third long jump title. She was the lone competitor to jump over six metres and set a new venue record with a leap of 6.13 metres.
She also finished fifth in the triple jump with a furthest jump of 11.72 metres.
Defending U SPORTS Champion Andreas Troschke rounded out the Pronghorns medals with a bronze in the weight throw. Troschke, who narrowly missed the podium at the Canada West Championships for the second year in a row, rose to the occasion at the national meet and took home the bronze with a throw of 18.08, which was a new personal best. He missed the silver medal by a mere centimetre.
