U SPORTS Bound: Pronghorns Ready for National Track and Field Challenge

3/4/2025 11:18:00 AM

LETHBRIDGE – Pronghorn Track and Field is gearing up for an exciting weekend at the 2025 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships, hosted by the University of Windsor from March 6-8. After a successful Canada West Championship, the team is primed for a competitive showing at the national level with standout athletes aiming for podium finishes.

The women's weight throw and shot put events are the events to watch for the Pronghorns, with Jinaye Shomachuk and Lauryn Morris representing the team. Shomachuk, fresh off a dominant performance at Canada West claiming gold in weight throw (19.70m) and silver in shot put (13.40m), will be looking to carry that momentum into U SPORTS. Morris, who also excelled at Canada West, taking third in the weight throw (15.01m), will join Shomachuk in the hunt for a national title.

"Training has been going very well and I see their success continuing at U SPORTS," Head coach Larry Steinke shared. "The key has been the consistency in training and knowing they are doing everything they need to be successful. Competing with that confidence, combined with the successes of sweeping the podium throughout the season, has made a huge difference in how they've competed this year. That will be evident at U SPORTS and for those who didn't qualify, in the next season."

Steinke also reflected on the team's evolution over the year. "It's been rewarding for the athletes. Despite a couple of issues going into Canada West, like Kimoya Edwards needing stitches on her knee a week out and a couple of athletes just missing U SPORTS qualification, it's been a really successful season, and U SPORTS will be the culmination of that hard work."

The Pronghorns' strong performances at the Canada West Championships, held at the University of Regina in late February, showcased the depth and talent within the team. In addition to Shomachuk's gold and silver, the women's weight throw saw Pronghorn athletes sweeping the podium, with Lauryn Morris taking third and Avery Sluik securing fourth place. Kimoya Edwards also had an outstanding showing in the women's 60m hurdles, placing fourth.

With these strong performances under their belts, the Pronghorns are heading into U SPORTS with a sense of confidence and determination.

Pronghorn fans can tune in to watch the women's weight throw and shot put events.
