The legacy of George and Carole Gemer remains a shining beacon within Pronghorn Track and Field at the University of Lethbridge. The Carole Gemer Memorial Award, established in her honor after her passing in 2016, stands as a testament to her lifelong dedication to athletics, leadership and community service.
Carole Gemer was an influential figure in the track and field community, renowned not only for her athletic achievements but also for her relentless commitment to mentoring young athletes. Alongside her husband, George Gemer, who spent over 47 years coaching and teaching at the University of Lethbridge, Carole's influence continues to inspire and uplift Pronghorn student-athletes.
The Carole Gemer Memorial Award is given annually to a Pronghorn Track and Field student-athlete who exemplifies excellence in sport, leadership, and community involvement—qualities that Carole valued and embodied throughout her life. This award celebrates her profound impact on both the sport and the community.
At 97, George Gemer continues to be a steadfast presence within the Pronghorn Athletics community. George regularly shows up to track and field practices and attends various events, embodying the same dedication and passion for the sport that he and Carole shared for so many years. His ongoing involvement serves as a reminder of the profound impact the Gemers have had on the University of Lethbridge and Pronghorn athletes.
In addition to the award, a powerful tribute to the Gemers' legacy stands on the University of Lethbridge campus—a statue created, designed and donated by George and Carole. Installed in 2016, the steel sculpture depicts a javelin athlete in mid-action, crowned with a gleaming symbol of achievement. This statue not only honours their significant contributions to athletics but also serves as an enduring source of inspiration for future generations, embodying the Gemers' dedication to the University and Lethbridge and the community.
"The Carole Gemer Memorial Award not only celebrates Carole's extraordinary contributions to the University of Lethbridge but also honors the qualities she cherished in athletes—hard work, perseverance, and kindness toward teammates," shared Neil Langevin, Executive Director for Pronghorn Athletics and Recreation.
