REGINA – Pronghorns Track and Field concluded a successful run at the Canada West Championships over the weekend, showcasing the depth and talent that has defined their season. Hosted by the University of Regina on February 21-22, the two-day competition saw several standout performances, with the athletes pushing themselves to the limit in their pursuit of podium finishes.
Jinaye Shomachuk delivered a spectacular showing in both the Women's Shot Put and Women's Weight Throw. The competition kicked off with a silver medal in the Women's Shot Put, with a throw of 13.40m. This impressive performance not only earned a spot on the podium but also set the tone for the rest of the championships.
The following day, Shomachuk continued dominating the Women's Weight Throw, clinching the gold with an outstanding 19.70m toss. This performance was a clear testament to exceptional form and consistency throughout the season. Shomachuk's efforts didn't go unnoticed, as the Field Athlete of the Year award was presented for remarkable performances throughout the year.
The Pronghorns displayed impressive depth in the Women's Weight Throw, with three athletes making it to the podium. Alongside Shomachuk's gold, Lauryn Morris and Avery Sluik delivered strong performances, securing third and fourth place, respectively, while Jade Cullen rounded out the top five with fifth-place. Morris threw 15.01m, while Sluik followed closely behind with a 14.68m toss.
Kimoya Edwards also had a standout performance in the Women's 60m Hurdles, earning a fourth-place finish. Edwards' performance in the hurdles was a key highlight for the Pronghorns in the sprint events.
While the weekend was headlined by Shomachuk's standout performances, the entire Pronghorns team contributed to a successful championship showing. Athletes demonstrated not only individual skill but also a sense of unity and determination throughout the competition.
With the Canada West Championships now in the rear-view, the Pronghorns can reflect on a weekend filled with outstanding performances and individual achievements, as they set their sights on the upcoming U SPORTS Championships.
