Female Athlete of the Week:
Jinaye Shomachuk – Women’s Track & Field
Making her first appearance at the U SPORTS Track and Field Championships, first-year thrower Jinaye Shomachuk shone on national stage, winning her first national medal.
Entering the meet ranked seventh, Airdrie, Alberta product peaked at the championship and on her final throw hit a new personal best to leap frog her University of Calgary opponent for second place and the U SPORTS silver medal.
Her best throw of 18.00 metres was one centimetre ahead of the bronze medalist and a personal best throw by nearly 1.5 metres.
Male Athlete of the Week:
Andreas Troschke – Men’s Track & Field
A three-time U SPORTS medalist, fourth-year throw Andreas Troschke continued the streak and completed the set of U SPORTS medals with a his first silver medal this past weekend at the U SPORTS Championship.
With a gold medal and two bronze medals in his trophy case, Troschke added to the set, winning the silver medal with a new personal best throw on his sixth and final throw of the meet. His toss of 18.68 eclipsed his previous personal best of 18.16 metres that was set only two weeks ago at the Canada West Championships.
