Lethbridge, AB – The Two Guys and a Pizza Place Pronghorn Athletes of the Week for the week ending January 18, 2015.
Female Athlete of the Week:
Kim Veldman – Women’s Basketball
Despite losing both games last weekend, fifth-year post Kim Veldman put forth a pair of solid performances, combining to score 39 points and 11 rebounds in losses to the Calgary Dinos.
Friday night, Veldman led all scorers with 22 points on 9 of 17 shooting in the 82-65 loss to the Dinos. She also grabbed five rebounds. The next night she led the Pronghorns with 17 points, while adding another six rebounds and one block in a 71-53 loss.
With six games remaining in the conference schedule, Veldman leads the Canada West in scoring, averaging 20.6 points per game and is eighth in the conference in rebounding, averaging 8 rebounds per contest.
Male Athlete of the Week:
Brandon Brine – Men’s Basketball
Australian national Brandon Brine led the Pronghorns in a weekend split with Pioneer Division leading Calgary Dinos, combining to score 59 points in the two game weekend series. In the two games, Brine shot better than 55% from the field, including 8 of 15 from behind the arc. He also grabbed 12 rebounds.
In Friday night’s loss to the Dinos, Brine led all scorers with 29 points, while shooting 11 for 21 from the field and hit three of seven three point attempts. He also added eight rebounds and two steals.
Brine followed up that performance, leading all scorers again Saturday night in the ‘Horns 82-70 win, which snapped the Pronghorns six game losing skid. During the win, Brine poured in 30 points on an efficient 9 for 15 shooting night, including 5 of 8 from behind the arc. He also grabbed another four rebounds and added two assists.
Brine was also named the Canada West third star of the week.
On the season, Brine is the eighth leading scorer in Canada West, averaging 17.8 points per game.
